Medico-Legal Partnership

 

A medical-legal partnership aims to improve the health and well-being of individuals, children, and families by integrating legal assistance in the medical setting.

 

Texas Rio Grande Legal Aide (TRLA) and BCHC have partnered to advocate for low-income families of Brownsville. The MLP staff work together with doctors and medical staff to:

 

  1. Determine if a patient has a legal problem that is affecting his/her health
  2. Address that problem through advocacy so that social determinants don’t stand in the way of a patient’s health.

• WIC
• Social Security

Housing Issues:

 

• Evictions
• Housing Conditions
• Termination of Section 8

Education:

 

• Denials of Special Education
• Evaluation or Services
• School Admissions
• Discipline Issues

 

ELIGIBILITY

To qualify for free legal services, you must:

• Be a resident of Southern Cameron County
• Be a patient of the Brownsville Community Health Center
• Meet income and asset limitations set by the federal government

This health center receives HHS funding and has Federal Public Health Service (PHS) deemed status with respect to certain health or health-related claims, including medical malpractice claims, for itself and its covered individuals.
